Petra Often described as the eighth wonder of the ancient world, it is without doubt Jordan’s most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction. It is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2000 years ago, turning it into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome
At the foot of Mount Sinai is located St Catherine Monastery, perhaps the oldest working Christian monastery. Site of pilgrimage for centuries, the monastery has one of the richest collections of ancient icons and manuscripts in the world. Egypt is officially known as the Arab Republic of Egypt and is located in north-eastern Africa and southwestern Asia. Cairo, the capital and largest city, is the most modern in the Middle East and Africa.

Jordan (Arabic: الأردنّ al-'Urdunn), officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is an Arab country in Southwest Asia spanning the southern part of the Syrian Desert down to the Gulf of Aqaba. It shares borders with Syria to the north, Iraq to the north-east, Israel and the Palestinian territories to the west, and Saudi Arabia to the east and south. It shares control of the Dead Sea with Israel (Palestine), and the coastline of the Gulf of Aqaba with Israel (Palestine), Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. Much of Jordan is covered by desert, particularly the Arabian Desert; however the north-western area, with the sacred Jordan River, is regarded as part of the Fertile Crescent. The capital city of Amman is in the north-west.
The ancient Nabataean city of Petra in southern Jordan is threatened by erosion, seismic damage, pollution, environmental degradation, and the pressures of international tourism. The World Monument Fund has regularly listed Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as one of the “100 Most Endangered Sites” in the world. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature estimates that 50% of the animal species in the Petra are threatened.
